![]() The Cat Fanciers Association also notes that orange male cats must come from mothers with orange, calico or tortoiseshell coloring. It’s rare to see a female orange-all-over cat (for this to happen, she would need an orange or red father and a mother with some orange coloring). Genetics are also the reason a majority of cats with orange-only coats are male. If they get an o version, they’ll be a different color. If they get an O version, they’re orange. If a cat has any additional splotches of color on her body, she is not regarded to be a solid coat type, but rather some kind that falls outside this physical classification category. Within their Calico spots, they may have Tabby stripes. Solid Color Coats A solid color coat is the easiest type of fur to spot because there’s no variation in colors. ![]() On a Siberian cat, the brown tabby coat gives them even more of a wild appearance, as they blend into the forest much easier. Calico cats have three colors: white, orange, and black. Different coat color options for a tabby Siberian are: Black / Brown tabby: This is the classic tabby look and comes in a range of shades of black and brown. If a cat has three colors and the distinctive Tabby forehead marking, they’re a Calico Tabby. Male cats on the other hand, are rarely calico or tortoiseshell because they only have that one X chromosome. The term Calico, much like Tabby, refers to a pattern of colors rather than a breed. Basepaws, maker of cat DNA tests that tell you about your cat’s genetic markers, says female felines are more likely to be calico or tortoiseshell because there are more gene combinations available to them through their X chromosomes (O/O, o/o, O/o, o/O). Rarer colors include chocolate, cinnamon, fawn, lilac, cream, smoke, and chinchilla. The most common solid-colored cats that you’ll see are black, gray, and white. Female cats have two X chromosomes, which means two chances to inherit orange hues. When it comes to personality traits, tabbies are considered friendly, happy-go-lucky cats, intelligent, sassy, very affectionate and wonderful companions. The dominant O gene will produce orange coloration the recessive o gene will not. ![]() Basically, the gene responsible for orange and red coat color is found on the X chromosome and comes in two versions: dominant (O) and recessive (o). We’ll make this quick because genetics are complicated. ![]()
